Study: Kid Gamers More Susceptible to Tooth Problems

Results from a new study seem to indicate that young gamers are twice as likely as their non-playing counterparts to develop tooth decay and cavities.

Wales Online carries a summation of the research. The study was conducted on teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16 years old and also suggested that kids who had no structured eating patterns were 30.0 percent more likely to suffer cavities.

It was suggested that snacking and drinking soft drinks while playing games contributed to the study’s results.

Rise of Tooth Loss

A recent survey conducted by Nobel Biocare of more than 50,000 U.S. adults came to a startling conclusion: half of those surveyed were missing at least one or more teeth, indicating a rise in tooth loss. However in the survey, only one in three respondents was aware that the effect of tooth loss was more than aesthetic and can actually damage facial shape. Just 25 percent knew that tooth loss causes bone erosion, which can eventually lead to a sunken or dropping jaw. Fortunetley, dental implants are more than just a cosmetic fix for tooth loss. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, implants can help avoid the effects of bone erosion. (Taken from the August 2009 issue of AGDImplact).

Dental & Medical News: Stem Cells Grow Replacement Tooth in Mouse August 13th, 2009

This is a breakthrough that could lead to a major overhaul in dental prosthetics and, more importantly, organ regeneration. The Wall Street Journal covered a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in which Tokyo University of Science researches implanted a “tooth germ” into a mouse’s empty tooth socket. The “tooth germ” consisted of cells with a genetic map of how to build a tooth.
Taken from Tokyo University of Science press release.
After 11 weeks, the tooth had grown from bud to maturity. The durability, shape, and natural stress responses mimicked that of a natural tooth. It also functioned like nature intended for a healthy tooth. Human testing has not been announced.

If this works, how it will change the dental industry? on the dentists level, Implant manufacturer level, and the dental material manufacturer level?

Thornhill Smile Centre is visible from space!!!

Flying back from a recent Spain and Portugal holiday I took a picture of the Thornhill Smile Centre Cosmetic Dentistry clinic from the plane. It's amazing how much is visible from 5000 feet!!
On the trip I had a chance to visit the MALO Dental Clinic in Lisbon. The clinic specializes in Dental Implant therapy and Denture Therapy. I brought back some great ideas in how to implement new techniques and add great value to the Thornhill Smile Centre's current Implant Rehabilitation and Denture patients.
